Preparing for Spring

farming

When the Gulf Coast low pressure system starts to develop in March and the TV makes a lot of noise about snow in Tokyo, I think that the snow accumulation is finally over, and I start to prepare for spring.

Maintenance of a 50-year-old cultivator

The chain oil on the rotary pawl shaft was seeping, so I took it apart to replace the oil seal. Naturally, the supply of parts had ended, so I had to find and machine parts that were close to the oil seal. In the past, I could easily ask for help from some old men nearby who were devoted to lathes, but now it is quite a challenge.

All parts are difficult to remove even with screw loosening materials.
This special oil seal is not available and requires modification.

Ensure drainage of fields

Maintenance of drainage ditches (culverts) in the fields, each time using a man-powered Yumbo to shovel away collapsed or washed away sediment. It is suitable for work on cold days because the body warms up quickly. However, it is hard and strenuous work.

Ditches need to be maintained every year because of the flow of soil from the fields.
We also rebuilt about five culvert bridges to cross over to the fields.

Fruit tree pruning

Since persimmons, chestnuts, and plums were finished in January before the pounding snow, we will start with figs and berries (blueberries, gooseberries, Juneberries, and blackberries) that can be cut from pruned branches.

Figs before pruning. This is the third year.
Blueberries are still under snow cover.

Maintenance of bamboo groves

Every year, we cut down bamboo trees as they move into the fields. This should be done in the fall. The Kyoritsu chainsaw I bought last year is a big help.

In the meantime, we cut down the basking bamboo.
チIt is a little expensive, but it is a reliable chainsaw.
