GET a 45 year old tiller!

farming

It is the middle of September and it is still extremely hot and humid, but only the weeds are vigorous. I was going to switch to no-till cultivation when my tractor broke down, but I couldn’t manage all the weeds, so I started looking for a used tiller.

Yanmar diesel cultivator

Tractors are expensive, even used ones, so I went around to junk shops looking for a used cultivator, and I got a 45-year-old cultivator at a reasonable price. It was a Yanmar 9 horsepower diesel cultivator, and the appearance was not so bad, but the coolant pipe was clogged, the engine oil was sludgy, and the diesel fuel oil was discolored and yellow.

The 9-horsepower diesel cultivator cultivates quite powerfully.

It has been a while since I have worked with a cultivator, but unlike a tractor, it takes a lot of strength when changing direction. It is not a “Jinba Ittai” (man and horse as one), but I feel that I am cultivating the soil as one with the machine.
Yanmar diesel engines are used in many fishing boats and have a reputation for being hard to break, but I am satisfied with the power of the machine, which is so strong that it is hard to believe that it is a 45-year-old cultivator.
It looks like we will be able to make rows for winter vegetables such as daikon, Chinese cabbage, and cabbage, as well as garlic, onions, beans, and peas to be planted in late fall.
The ridging will be done with a 40-year-old Mametora management machine.

How far can the old man and the clunky machine combination of tilling and ridging go?

Realization of autumn!

No matter how hot the days get, the daylight hours are getting shorter, and the plants and trees are signaling autumn.

It is eaten with chestnut rice.
Hagi flowers are beginning to bloom profusely.
