Spring in Snow Country

nature

A month has passed since the last heavy snowfall (2/22), and the snow is all gone and spring has sprung. The early-blooming small plum trees have just started to bloom. From now on, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, pear blossoms, and grape blossoms will all bloom at once rather than sequentially. It is now a good season. The sky is blue and the airplane clouds are beautiful.

Happy and not-so-happy spring flowers

When the small plum blossoms begin to bloom, cedar pollen begins to scatter at the same time. I have been allergic to pollen since some time ago. I never had it when I was a child, nor had I ever heard of it. Does the modern diet cause the immune system to run amok?

It is a happy flower that I can’t wait to see.
It is the cedar pollen that is about to burst.

It is the first feast of spring.

Bitterness is the taste of spring!
Sour and delicious!
Wild mitsuba has an excellent aroma!

Butterbur sprouts, horsetail, and Japanese parsley are on the table in this order. Good for tempura, good for ohitashi. They are the seasonal taste of spring.

Pretty flowers (weeds) in the field

The birdeye speedwell, the chickweed, and the purpl dead nettle are all small weeds that bloom first in the field in spring, but they are quite beautiful when looked at closely.
All of them are non-native plants, and the kohakobe(chickweed) came with rice cultivation. The rest are non-native species from around the Meiji period. The “Ooinunofuguri” was named by the celebrated biologist Tomitaro Makino.

Alien species from Meiji era. Named by Mr. Makino.
Oldest invasive species since the Jomon period
Invasive species of the Meiji era.

leaf compost

We are beginning to prepare for spring plowing by spreading decomposed fallen leaves from the forest onto the fields. The white mold (filamentous fungus) on these fallen leaves is said to be useful for crops.

It is a white mold and is said to live symbiotically with plant roots.
